Herodotus and the Value of Stories

11 episodes · listening order

This route supports the Dutch vwo Grieks centraal examen 2027, whose set theme, as the syllabus names it, is De waarde van verhalen, the value of stories: what makes an account worth trusting, tested here against myth and eyewitness report. It opens with four introductions to Herodotus as a historian, covering his travels, his methods as an investigator, and the shape of the Histories as a work built from nine books and digression as much as narrative. Three episodes follow directly from Book One: the road to the Persian Wars, Croesus's push into Persian territory, and his meeting with Solon that the syllabus sets as part of the pensum. The route then turns to what Herodotus claims to have seen and learned in Egypt, and to the women he folds into his history alongside its myths. It closes on the case for and against calling him the Father of Lies, and on In Our Time's account of the standard he set for weighing evidence.
