Games and spectacle

Gladiators, chariots, beast hunts and the crowd that decided.

69 entries · 68 hours · 61 with a written verdict · British 24 · Australian 19 · American 11 · Mixed 4

The Circus Maximus held a quarter of a million people, which no venue on earth has matched since. Gladiators were professionals with contracts, trainers and fans, and most fights ended with both men walking out. Harry Sidebottom and Alexander Mariotti both make the case that the arena tells you more about Roman politics than the senate does.

3h 17mSpartacus EssentialFilm

Kubrick's, with Kirk Douglas, and the film that broke the Hollywood blacklist by putting Dalton Trumbo's name on the credits. The history is loose and the politics of the making are a story in themselves.
